26 July - Kargil Vijay Diwas
"I don't think any army in the world has fought under such adverse climatic and terrain conditions." - General VP Malik
Today marks the 21st anniversary of the victory of Kargil. The Indo-Pak conflict that took place between May and July 1999 is the most recent example of high altitude warfare in mountainous terrain. Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year in honour of the Kargil war heroes, the 527 soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces who laid down their lives for our country along with a flight lieutenant, taken as a prisoner of war. It was therefore a bittersweet moment for India as it took command of the high outposts that they'd lost to Pakistan. From the brave and daring Captain Vikram Batra to the Group Captain K Nachiketa the stories of their valour still inspire a fire within us.
For a country that is known for its glorious freedom struggle we are yet to truly empathize with the struggles of these soldiers as they brave the cold and spiky terrains fearing neither frostbite nor death. Even a democracy can't ensure the safety of its citizens without an army, so let us salute the soldiers we lost and those who are still alive and serving our nation.
